This Weekend: Shannon & Monica Brown Are Making A Difference Through The Wood-Star Music Festival

By Team BLAM

NBA Phoenix Suns guard Shannon Brown is serious about giving back. That is why he launched the Wood-Star Music Festival last year, a music festival showcasing R&B and old school hip-hop artists. The proceeds benefit the Shannon Brown Foundation. Shannon started the foundation in an effort to provide scholarships and financial assistance to inner-city youth.

This weekend, activities included a free basketball clinic yesterday for children in seventh through 11 grades and culminates in a celebrity basketball game today featuring local and national celebrities.

We love how Shannon & Monica are using their time, talents, & moolah to give back to the community. It truly makes a difference for young people (and older folks too) to see this beautiful couple doing big things together. Their image alone is empowering.

Shannon’s wife of two years, Monica, headlined the concert yesterday.  Other performers included Robin Thicke, Estelle, Dawn Richard and Fantasia.

Monica is currently promoting her new album, “New Life,” which features a duet with singer Brandy on the single, “It All Belongs to Me.” Fourteen years ago, the two recorded the hit song, “The Boy is Mine.” Now, the mother of two is touting her new single, “Without You,” which she said is about  her hubby Shannon. How cute!

If you’re in the Chicago area, head on out to support the Brown’s at the Wood-Star Music Festival today. Here are the details:

Tamia Talks About Being Called A ‘Basketball Wife’ And Why She Picked Hubby For Her New Video

It truly is refreshing to see a celebrity couple who is committed to each other and committed to their marriage.  R&B singer Tamia chats with HipHollywood.com about featuring her NBA hubby Grant Hill in her new video and being called a “Basketball Wife.”  Tamia says that she picked her hubby purely for his looks…but what Grant will tell you is that she picked him because he was cheap. LOL

Congratulations To Mr. & Mrs. Bobby Brown

Blackloveandmarriage.com congratulates R&B singer Bobby Brown and fiancée Alicia Etheredge on tying the knot on Monday.

According to People magazine, the R&B singer performed with New Edition less than 24 hours prior to walking down the aisle to marry his fiancee/manager Alicia Etheridge.

Brown’s rep tells CNN that the ceremony was “beautiful.” The groom wore a red suit with Adidas sneakers, the footwear of choice for the newly married couple’s one son together, 3-year-old Cassius, who served as ring-bearer. Brown shared an Instagram photo from the special day, which also included four adorable flower girls.

The couple got engaged in 2010 at a New Edition concert after dating for close to three years.

Brown, 43, was previously (and infamously) married to the late Whitney Houston, who he divorced in 2007. In addition to Cassius, Brown has one daughter, Bobbi Kristina, from his relationship with Houston, as well as three other kids.

Life’s Essentials With Ruby Dee: A Story Of Love, Art, & Activism

By Muta’ Ali

Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee are legends of the stage and screen. Throughout their careers, which span over six decades, Ossie & Ruby have helped pave the way for generations of young black actors, filmmakers and activists. I know Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee simply as Grandpa and Gram Ruby.

I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to examine more deeply the lives and careers of my grandparents and, with my grandmother Ruby, explore the pivotal, personal and professional choices she and Ossie made that lead them to achieve success in their marriage, their careers, their contribution to the civil rights movement and more.

The hope is to, through documenting their story, discover the secrets of divine love; romantic, professional, spiritual, communal, and self love. By telling the story of their marvelous lives and juxtaposing past with present, I’ll learn for myself and everyone who looks on what is essential to life and to love.

We will screen a portion of this documentary at a reception/screening in New York this October 2012 to honor my grandmother on her 90th birthday (October 27th, 2012).

Chris Bosh’s Baby Mama, Allison Mathis, Has Applied For Food Stamps

Misfortune has struck Miami’s Heat star Chris Bosh’s 3-year-old daughter, Trinity.

Little Trinity lives with her mother Allison Matthis in Florida and due to her mother’s recent job loss at a construction company and her home being up to foreclosure, she’s been forced to apply for food stamps.  Having a child with such a well known star, one would usually suspect there was no need to apply for food stamps; she should be getting enough from him in child support.  In fact, according to the state guidelines, a person in Bosh’s status, whose yearly salary is around $18 million, should be paying around $30,000 monthly in child support.  So what has happened?

Matthis’s lawyer, Jane Carey speaks out about her ordeal.  “Believe it or not, Bosh pays her a mere $2,600-a-month in child support!” she exclaims.  “My client just lost her job and applied for food stamps for her and Mr. Bosh’s daughter. She’s about to be foreclosed on, he won’t help her and all he wants to do is go to London with his daughter. Are (you) kidding?”

Like typically estranged parents, both Bosh and Matthis have been in and out of court for everything, from child support to time spent with the child.  The recent debate has been about Bosh wanting to take 3-year-old Trinity with him to London in order to watch the Summer Olympics with her.  Florida judge ruled against Bosh’s request however to take his child out of the country.

Carey has now returned back the courts and is asking an adjustment be made on the child support due to its ridiculously low amount for a man with his type of salary.  A judgment has yet to be made for this adjustment so in the mean time, Matthis has taken the alternative route of asking for help while she awaits the judges decision.

Rihanna Refuses To Quit Chris Brown, But Why?

By Kristin Offiler

Jay-z’s management firm, Roc Nation, has told Rihanna to steer clear of Chris Brown in the wake of Ri-Ri using Brown’s voice on her new single and then getting into it on Twitter with his new girlfriend, Karrueche Tran.

But do you think she’s going to take that advice? Nope!

According to the New York Post, a source has said, “Her management banned her from reuniting with Chris, but she said she’ll do whatever the hell she wants to. Rihanna is rebelling. She says they have been working her too hard and she wants some time to herself. They fear she’ll secretly record an album with Brown, just to defy them.”

Yikes, girlfriend! What’s behind this irrational rebellion? Well, it might have something to do with her insatiable attraction to danger and bad boys.

In an interview with Elle recently, the 24-year-old said, “When you know you like a guy, or when you’ve been in love, that’s the same feeling you have swimming with sharks.” Sure, she got up close and personal with some scary sharks while filming her movie Battleship, but really? Love is the same feeling as swimming with razor-toothed sharks?

She went on to say, “That’s the same feeling you have when doing anything daring, risky, spontaneous, or unpredictable. I think having those butterflies is the closest thing to being in love. And when you play it safe, you don’t feel anything at all.”

Former NFL Baller Chris Draft Shows True Love As He Shares Loving Memories Of His Wife Keasha

A couple of months ago, we posted an incredibly  heart-warming love story  about former NFL baller Chris Draft, 35, who lost his wife Keasha Rutledge, 38, to lung cancer one month after they were married.

As a result of the numerous postings around the web about Chris’ emotional experience, ESPN caught wind of  the tragedy and published an extended version of this amazing love story.

Also, Draft opened up  about losing his wife Keasha and their loving memories.

Check out the video below:

In an exclusive interview with Essence.com, Chris Draft opened  about his love for Keasha and their loving memories.

Here is a snippet from the interview below:

ESSENCE.COM: Since your wife’s passing, you’ve shown such strength and shared so much of her life with the world. Why did you choose to share her story in this way?

CHRIS DRAFT: We put the pictures up [online] so people could really see the life in her, not just how she passed away. We want people to see that her faith allowed her to live before her diagnosis, and to continue to live with it, and find the joy in each day. Even when you get bad news, you have to find the joy in life, which is definitely not easy. Most of the pictures in the montage people have seen are from the past year. She was still enjoying her friends, and still enjoying her family. Yes, it was a little different with cancer being there, but at the same time, you find a way to enjoy it. That’s where you’re at, you know?

ESSENCE: You both stayed positive throughout her battle. How were you able to do that, after learning of her diagnosis?

DRAFT: It was never, “Oh, I’m just going to smile through it.” Keasha was like, “I’m going to fight. We’re going to do what we have to do to go after this.” Stage 4 lung cancer is not a good diagnosis. I mean, the numbers are horrible, and to get that news without even having a sign beforehand, makes it that much tougher. She knew she had great friends, and great family, and a great support system, and she said, “Okay, so what do I have to do to fight? We’re going to fight it each and every day.” Getting the full diagnosis, and knowing exactly what we were fighting, was a very hard process. She did such a great job of really looking at it like, “Hey, I have to do this in order to have a chance to be better.” She stuck with that and continued to smile, even after she went to appointment after appointment.

ESSENCE: Was your wedding day everything you dreamed it would be? You both looked so happy in your video.

DRAFT: I wanted her to just be able to really enjoy it. That was my only focus. She was able to get up. She was able to walk. She was able to dance. Dancing was just her. Her 88-year-old grandmother got up at our wedding and she started dancing, and she got Keasha back up and she started dancing too. The weather was perfect. It was 70 degrees on Thanksgiving weekend – wow. It seemed like everything just worked itself out for her. It was so beautiful. Her friends and family were all able to be there. It was a good day — a good weekend.

ESSENCE: If you could send out a message to Keasha this Valentine’s Day, what would you want her to know?

DRAFT: [Long pause.] Keasha, I‘ll always love you. We’re gonna keep fighting. We’re gonna keep fighting! We’re gonna keep inspiring people and help to change people’s lives, I promise.
