By Team BLAM

We’re excited to have another opportunity to talk about black love on the National Airwaves.  This morning at 11am we will be on the Toni & Griff Show of Atlanta’s WWWE Am 1100  talking about the Black Love edition of Ebony Magazine. Tune in if you can. This year Ebony has done something unique, in the issue their celebrating the 10 “hottest couples” and has 3 different covers with 3 different couples.

This is apparently the first time each of the couples have landed an Ebony cover together. How cute!

Here’s what T.I. had to say about his commitment to Tiny:

“Once I made my mind up that I was going to be committed to this relationship, I started being married then and there. Since I’ve been married, it’s the same relationship, we’re the same people. We treat each other the same way, and we’re just as happy now as we were before.”

Meagan Good on her romancing (is that a word? smile…) skills:

“What do I do for him that’s romantic? I try to surprise him whenever he comes to town. I wear nice things…Wink!”

Bishop T.D. Jakes golden advice on marriage (listen up ya’ll):

“Marriage requires work and expecting the unexpected. Don’t let other people design a marriage you can’t live with. Keep other people out your business. Every marriage is different.”

Ooooo Weeeeee!!!! We love Black Love!!!!

Don’t forget to tune in this morning if you can!

Stop Paying. Start Pushing. 😉

Rockmond Dunbar Proposes To Girlfriend Maya Gilbert!

We at BLAM want to congratulate Rockmond Dunbar and fellow actress Maya Gilbert on their recent engagement.  According to SandraRose.com:

The happy couple have been dating just over a year. Gilbert, a native of Ohio, is one of the ex-girlfriends of actor/comedian Eddie Murphy.

The 30-something star of ‘Sex Chronicles’ began dating Dunbar, 39, after his ex-wife ran off with NFL legend Deion Sanders. (It is typical of male celebrities to value their woman based on who she has slept with in the past.)

After divorcing his wife, Dunbar reportedly said: “I deserve a partner who’s going to be my partner 100 percent of the time.”

Former NBA Star Keyon Dooling Opens Up About Childhood Abuse On Katie Couric’s Talk Show. #TakesCourage

Retired NBA player Keyon Dooling and his wife Natosha Dooling made an appearance on Katie Couric’s new talk show, “Katie,” and opened up about him being sexually abused as a child.

During the interview, Dooling recounted how and when the abuse first started and what’s he doing now to deal with the situation. Keyon said the abuse began when he was 5-years old at the house of one of his brother’s friends. He also said his father showed him adult movies at the early age of 7.

When Keyon Dooling announced his retirement from the NBA in late September, it came as a big surprise- but after years of suppressing a history of sexual abuse, it was clear the 12-year veteran needed time to focus on himself- a change in his life.

After displaying signs of a form of post-traumatic stress disorder, Dooling had to spend time in a psychiatric hospital last summer which brought him to the conclusion that he would be unable to continue his NBA career.

NBA.com’ David Aldridge talks about the event in detail which led to Dooling’s admittance to a mental health facility.

Aldridge reported:

Dooling was exhibiting behaviors familiar to soldiers returning from war zones. But Post Traumatic Stress Disorders aren’t limited to those who fight in wars. Police officers, firefighters, anyone subject to a severe emotional episode can suffer from PTSD. Dooling’s problems came to a head in August.

He was at home, playing in the street in front of his home with his kids. A neighbor thought he was playing too roughly with the kids and called the police. There is uncertainty about how many officers showed up — 10? 12? 20? — but it was more than one. The Doolings were new to the neighborhood. They know the police were just doing their job, responding to a call. But a bunch of cops showing up, unannounced, banging on your door is a little disconcerting.

“So I ran to the door to see what was going on,” Keyon Dooling said. “I was like, ‘Who is this knocking like they’re the damn police?’ That’s what I said to myself. So when I got to the door, it was really the police. They was like, ‘Get on the ground, get on the ground, get on the ground!’ So I got on the ground.”

Natosha didn’t know what to do, what to tell her kids. She was scared. Keyon had always been the strong one, able to handle whatever. And now he was being taken away.

“I was just terrified,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘What is going on? Like, what are these people doing in my house?’ … And they separated us. They had the kids over here and me over there and Keyon over here. It was horrible. I was living in a nightmare. I was really living in a nightmare. I was terrified for myself, for my kids.”

Dooling was taken away and hospitalized for evaluation. He didn’t remember voluntarily signing into the hospital. The details are hazy, in part, because he was immediately put on medication. One of the primary symptoms of PTSD is paranoia, and Dooling was surely paranoid. He didn’t want to see anybody — or anybody to see him.

Much respect and admiration go out to Keyon from the BlackLoveAndMarriage.com team for his courage and willingness to tell his story….someone else will begin their healing from watching him. We guarantee it.

Black Girls Do Rock!!! D.L. Hughley Better Recognize

 By Ayize Ma’at

Instead of hating on black women let’s start lifting up and loving on black women. We are them and they are us.

In a recent interview with NPR.org host Michelle Martin, comedian/actor D.L. Hughley made some controversial statements regarding his dislike of women, especially black women.

Really D.L…..really?  I don’t know if it’s schtick or what…but what I do know is that it’s insensitive, disrespectful, and asinine for you to passionately and categorically assert that BLACK WOMEN ARE MESSED UP AND ANGRY ALL THE TIME.  C’mon son…you know better but you choose to identify and put forth the worse.   Sample generalization is not applicable when it comes to black women as a whole.  Black women are diverse.  Black women are multi-dimensional.  Black women are perfectly imperfect.  Black women are beautiful.  Black women deserve respect. PERIOD!!!

On his dislike of women:

MARTIN: You don’t like women?

HUGHLEY: I don’t like the way they process – no, I don’t. I enjoy their company. I do not like the way that they reason. You can’t understand them.

MARTIN: Well, for a man who has been married for 26 years and has two daughters – you have three children overall, two daughters and a son – you don’t think you’ve figured it out?

HUGHLEY: Do you think any man has figured it out? Anyone? Anyone? Name me a man who says I’ve figured women out, I got it.My daughters, who I love immensely, are so certain, like if a man can have a face only a mother can love, then women can have personalities only fathers can love.

On black women:

MARTIN: …black women is – the only black woman you could be married to is your wife.

HUGHLEY: Yes.

MARTIN: Because…

HUGHLEY: Because…

MARTIN: …black women are so messed up? I mean what – or because she’s so great?

I mean I’m sure she’s great but…

HUGHLEY: Well, in her ability to kind of tolerate my – it’s her ability to tolerate me, A) and B) I’ve never met an angrier group of people. Like black women are angry just in general. Angry all the time. My assessment, out of, just in my judgment, you either are in charge or they’re in charge, so there’s no kind of day that you get to rest(ph).

MARTIN: I have to ask whether is it because black women are an easy target?

HUGHLEY: No.

MARTIN: And so you can say these things because nobody is going to…

HUGHLEY: Do you think black women are an easy target?

MARTIN: Well, I mean I’m thinking you or – one of the ways you came to public attention is your defense of Don Imus for calling the Rutgers women’s basketball team nappy headed ho’s…

HUGHLEY: Right.

MARTIN: …and I understand that your defense was free speech, which I think many people understand. But if you think he’d said that about another group of women, that that would’ve been considered funny?

HUGHLEY: I can’t, really, that’s like, I can’t disprove or prove a negative, but I can say this: that I have defended any number, I have defended Michael Richards for the N-word. I’ve defended Tracy Morgan for his comments. I defended Rush Limbaugh. You know, to me, you know, what people are talking about has never really kind of worked its way into my mindset. It is the idea that they have the right to say it. So I think that’s really kind of an unfair – optically, that looks different than the way I see things. But…

MARTIN: OK.

HUGHLEY: …I don’t think black women are easy targets at all. I respect them great – a great deal. I think that to pretend like I don’t see things the way that I do is to do a disservice to them.
