By Team BLAM

The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s 2nd Annual Girls Who Rule The World Mentoring Weekend (GWRTW) took place October 28-30th, mentoring 100 teenage girls from metro Atlanta’s counties, for an action-packed, empowering program to address real-world issues of teenage life, guide them to embrace their unique self-worth and power, forge new peer and mentor relationships and more at the Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort and Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain, GA.

With Georgia experiencing high rates of childhood obesity, high school drop outs among teenage girls, and exploitation of underage women by sex traffickers, Marjorie Harvey hosted the program encompassing self-discovery, fitness, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, mentoring, welcoming inspiring guests during the weekend including 5-time Olympian and Basketball Hall of Famer Teresa Edwards, CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and Fredricka Whitfield, motivational speaker Jackie Brewton, Mikki Taylor, Keshia Knight Pulliam, one-of-a-kind fitness in the natural splendor of Stone Mountain Park, as well as candid conversation and insight from herself, and Steve Harvey sharing insight on the male perspective.

The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s 2nd Annual Girls Who Rule The World Mentoring Weekend (GWRTW) also welcomed back 10 young women from the 2010 GWRTW mentoring class to serve as junior mentors, and had support from the Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort, Stone Mountain Park, The Coca-Cola Company, Bank of America, Delta Airlines, Inc., Frito-Lay, Inc., Microsoft, Neiman Marcus, Tony Brewer and co., Newell Rubbermaid, Susan G. Komen, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta/Strong 4 Life, K&G Fashion Superstore, and more. Pre-selected from an application process, the teenage girls admitted to GWRTW sustain a role with The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation from admission until two years post college, with this process including a mentor pairing and ongoing educational and developmental experiences with trusted mentors, to ensure continued enhancement and positive growth in helping these young women achieve their goals.

All three women shared so much of themselves with the young ladies. After the speaking session the young ladies were routed to a beautiful ballroom decorated in white, pink and green. Stations were set up for the young ladies. There was a make- up/ make over station, manicure station, photo station, paint/ art work station, food stations, DJ station, massage station and so many more. The girls were really involved. I returned to pick up my daughter on Sunday. Steve Harvey was the highlight because he had "real talk" with our young ladies. He shared that all he could speak on would be manhood. He shared with the young ladies what young boys/ men are looking for from them and that it is up to them to determine how they are treated by the boys/ men that they allow into their life. He shared the information in words/ terms so that the girls hopefully understood without misinterpretation what was meant. The event was phenomenal and I highly recommend this mentoring initiative/ camp. It was only three days, but I as a parent, see what a difference it has made to my daughter, Taylor Hudson. Also, this event was well planned and executed!

My daughter participated in this event last weekend and it was spectacular!
Initially, there was a mishap; however, Ms. Kim, Ms. Morgan and Mrs. Harvey worked it out, superseding my expectation. My daughter received about 15 minutes of individual time with S. O'Brian and Mrs. Harvey. Both ladies are phenomenal and are just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. I remained at the event until 12:00 a.m. for the first day of events and was very impressed. S. O'Brian and F. Whitfield (CNN) spoke with the young ladies and then S. Taylor (Essence) spoke with the young ladies.

So sorry for the typo. We were trying to say we have helped to raise countless young people in our community. We will not give up. We are just looking for help for our grandson.

We have been searching the internet trying to figure out if there are any of the Harvey Camps that will accept children living with grandparents. We have a 16 year old grandson that needs help. His mom, our daughter, died in a car accident. We have offered the best love we know. We have worked with our pastor, school personnel, numerous counselors, law enforcement personnel and a probation officer. Our grandson is on a wrong track and we just don't know what else to do to get him to turn his life around! He seems headed for disaster. We successful raised our children and also helped mentor and raise countless other your people in our community. We are both retired now and have tried to focus on our grandchildren, but we just can't seem to reach our grandson. We love him and we want to save him. Please let us know if we can get him into one of your programs. Please help!!!
